Pakistan Context

  • Severe water scarcity affects many regions, with supply approaching 500 m³ per capita per year in some areas.

  • Rainfall is highly seasonal and variable.

  • In Karachi (arid, 180–210 mm annual rainfall), rooftop harvesting combined with 90% recycling can make households largely water self-sufficient.

  • In Islamabad (higher rainfall), the potential is even greater.

  • In Balochistan, where mining is expanding and piped water is scarce, rainwater harvesting is already used and can be significantly enhanced with modern treatment.
